Import old emails into Gmail with Gmail Loader

April 22, 2007

Import old emails into Gmail with Gmail LoaderWindows/Mac/Linux: If you’ve recently made the switch to Gmail but you’re missing out on all your old email archives, the free Gmail Loader can load all your old messages into your current Gmail account.

The Gmail Loader is primarily designed to import existing emails saved in the mBox format - the default for Thunderbird - so if you’re rolling with an Outlook .pst file, you might need import to Thunderbird first. We’ve mentioned Gmail Loader once before, but it’s come a long ways, especially for Windows users. Mac and Linux users will need to do a bit more work, tackling the Gmail Loader source (it’s still doable, but it’ll require some command line chops).

If you’ve wanted to search-not-sort with all your pre-Gmail emails, the free, cross-platform Gmail Loader is a great tool. If that doesn’t do the trick, you might also want to try previously mentioned gExodus, which also lets you label your imported mail. If you’ve successfully imported your old email to Gmail, share you experience in the comments.
